VMVision Manager willonly run on x86 systems. We work to resolve an issue with x64 bit systems and hope to release a new 64bit version as soon as possible.

VMVision Manager uses multiple intefaces to coummunicate with the Vcenters, Hosts and Databases.

This is why the configuration is very important, otherwise the software will not run as expected!

Checklist

·         Run vSphere client and connect to your vCenter. Verify everything runs as expected

·         Run Power CLI and try to connect to a host or vCenter (Connect-VIServer <Servername>)

·         Use putty or any other SSH Terminal software and open a connection to each ESX Host.

 If any of this tests fail please follow the instructions below 

 vSphere Client installation

Please install the newest version of the vSphere Client. I f possible choose the default location for the installation.

vSphere Power CLI and VIX API installation

Power CLI  requires Powershell which is installed on Windows Vista and Windows 7 by default. If you run Windows XP you have to install Powershell first (Download it from the Microsoft Website) 
Download the newest version of the power CLI. In the new version the VIX API is also included and will be installed during the Power CLI Setup. To run Power CLI you have to set the Execution Policy. In the newest Power CLI version this is already set by the installation when you accept the dialog to adjust this setting. If you have to set the policy manually, start Power CLI and enter: set-ExecutionPolicy UnrestrictedSome older version of the VIX API will not run as expected and you might experience an application crash when expanding multiple folders on the guest file transfer window. If you have a problem, please uninstall the old VIX API and download and install the newest versoin.  We recomment to uninstall also Power CLI and download the newest version with the new VIX API integrated.

Select Tab Driver & Tools. It is located in the Automation Tools.

Allow SSH Access to ESX Hosts

Why VMVision needs SSH Access

 SSH offers some functionality which is not available in the other interfaces.  Here are some features which require SSH:

• Retrieve and list unregistered Virtual Machines and Virtual Disks.
• Our SSH Terminal will always guide you to the location of the Virtual Machine files.
• Kill a Virtual Machine Process, if the Virtual Machine is not responding anymore.
  It is not supported by VMWare. Use it carefully in difficult situations when a Virtual Machine is not responding to a power off. 
  We have tested it and it is running since some years in the free software ESXGuide ESX-Manager. Until now no problem was reported.

By default SSH is blocked for the root user on ESX-Hosts and disabled for ESXi Systems

For older versions please follow the instructions below.
Older versions of ESXi do ship with the ability to connect with SSH, but it is disabled by default and not supported by VMware.
Our tests showed that no problems occurred issuing the SSH Commands to the hosts J

Steps to enable SSH on older ESXi Systems (On the ESX Host Console)
Watch on You Tube. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4IJr5dx2Aw 

Enter unsupported in the console and press Enter.
If you typed in unsupported correctly, you will see the Tech Support Mode warning and a password prompt.
Enter the password for the root login. You should see the prompt ~# ·        
Use vi to edit the file /etc/inetd.conf          
Find the line that begins with #ssh      
Remove the #
Save the file, If you’re new using vi, then move the cursor down to #ssh line and then press the Insert key.
Move the cursor over one space and then hit backspace to delete the #.

Press ESC and type in :wq to save the file and exit vi

If you make a mistake, you can press the ESC key and then type :q! to quit vi without saving the file.

Some remote consoles might have the wrong keyboard and you have to use the ASCII Sequences while pressing the ALT key

ESC use ALT 27To restart the SSH service run the command: service sshd restart

How to enable the root access ESX 3.x and ESX 4.x

To open the Firewall Ports on your ESX Host allow access to ESX Server for a service or management agent

• Log on to the vSphere Client and select the server from the inventory panel
• The hardware configuration page for the server appears
• Click the Configuration tab and click Security Profile
• Select the SSH Client and SSH Server checkbox and click OK
